Subject: Piano Rolls
I wanted to drop you a line to tell you how wonderful it is to have
these piano rolls preserved and archived.
As a kid, I rebuilt player pianos. I was trained (somewhat) by a
master rebuilder named Arnold Neuhaus in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I
rebuilt many pianos including a beautiful Walnut Upright with a
standard action that I still own.
The thought of having this library available to people with new
electronic pianos is amazing. You've brought back a lot of memories
from my youth as I played hundreds of those rolls when I would test
the pianos. I feel like I know every note of some of them.
I'm tempted to build a scanner... or buy one and be a part of
scanning the rolls.
Thanks again,
Michael Andrew

Re: You'll never run out of music again
Posted by: "Colin" evinruding@yahoo.com
I hope you like music from the 10's, 20's and 30's because theres a
lot of it in this archive. Many of the files came from the hard work
of Terry Smythe in Canada.
99% of the files I've played, have worked perfectly on my c3 Wagon
grand. No, I have not played them all.
Be sure to play "Aggravatin Pappa", its a real swinger. "The birth
of the blues" makes my c3 absolutely sing. Theres also some
selections called "dinner music" that are fantastic. Let me know
what your favorites are, as like I said, I havent heard them all.
Theres like 4,426 Files in this archive. I dont think any of it is
copyrighted, and I think that the composers and the artists who
played this music would feel good that people like us are still
enjoying their music, even so long after their deaths.
I have it organized into self explanitory folders, expression, non
expression etc. I suggest using van bascos free karaoke player (not
just for karaoke) to play your piano. Its 55mb zipped, so the
download will take a few minutes, even if you do have hi speed
internet. Even if you dont, its worth the wait.
The files in the "expression" folders are roll scans from expression
capable pianos such as the Welte, Duo-Art, and the Ampico. These
songs capture every nuance of how the piece was played by the
original recording artist. Kinda neat to think about.
If you need help setting up the van basco player to work with your
usb midi adapter post here and I'll see if I can help, but its
actually very easy, and its way better than fiddling around with
720k diskettes all night long.
Heres the link to the Van Basco Software
http://www.vanbasco.com/download.html
And heres the link to the midi file archive:
http://www.tecrepair.com/midi.zip
In order to avoid bloating the groups bandwidth, I put the zip file
on my own server. I only have so much bandwidth, and since thats the
case I'll probably pull it down after a few days, so download it
soon.
If you enjoy them as much as I have send me a virtual beer!

Recently I ran across your web site on roll scanning.
I am so pleased that you and others have been so
dilligent at preserving this musical heritage.
I'm sure there are many, many more music rolls out
there to scan. But I had a question, has anyone been
preverving the words to the songs and building some
sort of database of these songs?
Keep up the good work!

Have faith! It's coming! It was about 17 years ago that
I lamented through the pages of our AMICA official journal that
music rolls were dying, and would somebody please come up with a
computer solution to somehow capture the content of music rolls
as a computer file while still possible to do so.
Three years ago, after many years of effort, Richard Stibbons in
the UK presented the world with a solution. For past 3 years,
we have been happily converting music rolls to midi. But not
the lyrics, nor the printed instructions on pipe organ rolls.
A year ago, Larry Doe presented the world with a roll scanner
capable of capturing printed data simultaneous with perforation
data. There are now 9 people with his new scanner. I am one
of them. See:
http://members.shaw.ca/smythe/MK4.htm
Scroll down through the pics and you will see that lyrics are
now part of the file.
Evolution is working in our favour. Three years ago, we had
nothing but a dream, now we have the ability to capture lyrics
and the music. What we do not yet have is a method of
automatically migrating the lyrics from the scan file over into
the midi file, karaoke still.
We are perceiving as next evolutionary step, a large screen
display of both the scan file and the midi file, scroll locked
together side by side. A visual/manual transcription will
then be possible.
It is highly unlikely that OCR software will ever be developed
that can "read" and interpret the "stencil" font used to print
lyrics. Just not possible.
As an option today, you have a fighting chance of acquiring
lyrics from somewhere in the vastness of the internet. A
Google search of a tune title will often turn up a web site
somewhere containing the lyrics. Relatively easy if the title
is made up of several words. Gets tough when the tune title
is a single word.
Sorry for this rambling answer. What you wish for is coming.
For now, other options will have to suffice.
Regards,
Terry

Your site has been a lot of fun to explore. We have done several

Hi! I just wanted to let you know how much I am enjoying your
collection! At one time I had an 88-note upright player, and
perhaps some 50 old rolls (and some modern ones) which I enjoyed
playing. Unfortunately I had to sell it when my mom died, her
house had to be sold, and I didn't have room for it! With the
excepttion of not being able to "expressively pump" anymore, I am
so glad the midi rolls are available to hear. Interestingly, I
haven't run across many of the rolls I used to own in your
collection of files, although I haven't had a chance to look at
all of them yet! (What a collection!) Anyway, thank you for your
time and generosity!

I have recently visited your site and could not believe it. I have owned several pianolas over the years and have

weight of them anymore. I now own a Yamaha 309 Grand Piano Midi. So you can imagine the excitement
when I found your site. There is no time to go to bed now!
Just a message to say thank you for your efforts in retaining a lot of musical history,
As a matter of interest I had an old roll in my collection called "Some day you will want me and I wont
want you" which was unplayable and I managed to get it copied on Playrite. You see it had so many
perforations on the roll, I KNEW IT MUST BE INTERESTING. Well I WAS NOT DISSAPOINTED.
It's unique and would sort out any pianola faults, it's a standard 88 roll and I STILL HAVE IT. Have you
heard of it? It's played by Victor Arden (Leclere)
Anyway thanks a lot

I have always wanted to play piano. Alas, having been born
during the depression years my family could not afford lessons, much
less a piano.
I always loved player pianos, as this was as close to having someone
play your favorite tunes in your favorite style as I could get. Never
owned one but played them incessantly when the opportunity presented
itself.
Now you have made it possible for me to virtually have my own player
piano. I have almost all of your scans and I want to say thank you for
this wonderful contribution to saving these old rolls, and also for
giving us the chance to have them in our home.
I have converted them to wav. files and have several cd's of them. It's
almost like being there to hear in person these great artists.
One change I did make was to convert the acoustic piano to honky tonk. I
saved the originals also.
So thank you from all of us old-timers who will continue to listen and
enjoy these rolls for years to come. Your unselfishness in providing
them free is unbelievable.

I have enjoyed your piano roll scans frequently and recognize many of them as rolls
I have or have had. You must have put a tremendous amount of effort into scanning
such a large volume of rolls and then making them available for many others to enjoy.
Thank you so much.
I have a player piano and probably 150 rolls that are quickly deteriorating. I came by them
several years ago when in the classified adds appeared "Player piano rolls-50 cents each"
I knew the value of the old rolls and paid a visit to the advertiser. I took all the rolls he had
and he threw in the piano free of charge.
The piano needs some repair now because it is tearing up my rolls along the edges and the
paper is so brittle it doesn't take much to destroy them.
I have downloaded some 2369 of your scans and written them to disk. I pop in the disk and
listen to several every day. I like this because by clicking a button you can watch as the
notes are streamed across the screen giving the appearance of the actual roll being played.
Some of the midis I have converted from midi to Wav then to mp3 which allows me to play
them in the car. Who would ever have guessed 20 years ago that the old rolls would be
preserved in such a way. Thanks to you I have quite a library of the old timers never to be
destroyed through time or on my old piano.

First, I'd like to thank you for sharing your midi files! I play piano,

listening to the files you've posted.
A little over a year ago, I finally acquired a neglected player piano of
my own, but have only just started building a collection of rolls.
However, my neighbor has dozens of rolls and a player piano of her own.
I told her about your efforts to preserve the rolls and the machine by
which they may be transcribed to an electronic format. Is there someone
in our area that could scan the rolls?
Thanks again for all your work,

Subject: A big thank you for your midi files........
I wanted to say thank you for your huge selection of midi files of the piano
rolls. I have had a Pianocorder for about 20 years now. It was limited to
the cassete tapes I had bought, which numbered about 8 Volumes of the
Classics and a few of the Ragtime ones. Also, I bought many of the single
tapes they put out. After listening to them over the years, I became tired
of them.
Along comes Mark Fontana. He just released some software to take midi files
like yours, play them through Winamp on a laptop through the pianocorder.
Now, there is such a plethora of music out there, it's heaven!
I am a professional musician, so I really appreciate all this great music
that I can play now. Thank you for your excellent collection of midi files,
and making them public!!

I am 73 and I often reflect upon cherished memories in my long ago
childhood, and a week or so I was thinking about my mother taking me to
someone's house and they had a player piano. I have wracked my brain and I
can't remember where it was but I remember a man sitting down at the
keyboard and pretending he was playing the piano, then he said he was going
to give his right hand a rest and the keys were still going up and down.
Then he took the other hand off and us kids sat there amazed while the piano
kept playing on. We spent the afternoon listening to the music, roll after
roll. That is one of my fondest memories.
You can't imagine my enjoyment after stumbling on your site. I took the
liberty of downloading all your zips. I commend you for all the work you
have done in preserving history.
Thanks again for making all this wonderful music available.

I strongly disagree with your comment that the files sound like a pianola
and not a "real" pianist playing them. The files that Terry gave us by
Hoffman, Liberace, Paderewski.. Rachmaninoff and numerous others to name
a few are as "live" as one can get. Maybe I have misunderstood your comment.
My C7 has never sounded like a pianola even when it is playing "pianola"

When listening to the files of the first batch, I assumed that the best
rolls will be post first and that in the subsequent batches the quality
and importance of the pieces will be less and less.
Wrong!
Each new batch is a box full of nice surprises, to the point that after
listening them on my DKV I always end wondering what is hidden to us in
the rolls still waiting to be converted.
Most of us will agree that when listening to this files on the DKV they
do not sound like a real pianist playing a real piano, no, they sound like
a real pianola (piano player) playing piano rolls and this is the final
point.
I agree with some of you have expressed that this is a treasure.
For those of us that sit and relax on our favorite sofa to have this
weird mix of a stream of memories and joy this is invaluable.
I can not find the words to express my gratitude to Terry for his
decision to share with us the results of his remarkable job.

to player pianos, but never had enough money to own one. Maybe
someday...............I'm a 50 year old teacher who was raised in a

on Saturday nights. I still remember my dad's deep voice on
"Whispering" and "Frankie and Johnny." He died when I was only 18. The
only song I'm missing that he used to sing now is "Good night
Sweetheart." That was my lullabye when a tiny girl rocked in his arms.

I was in high school and worked summers as a carrier. I became intrested in Mr. Cook because he wore a pistol during work. He did this because at that time the U. S. Postal Service was concerned about armed robbery. After getting to know Mr. Cook, he invited me to his home in the Bronx, and then he gave me a tour of the factory where he worked part time, making
piano rolls The reason for my visiting him and his work place was to do a photo essay school of making piano rolls. After taking the pictures, he invited me back to his home to watch him writing musical arrangements for musicians. He would play a phonograph record, and on blank music sheets, would write the part to be played for each instrument as it was being played. Even after almost fifty years, I can still recall the visit and my amazement at his musical skill.
